In Their Own Words: A Panel Discussion on Immigration

Today, immigration to the United States is at its highest level since the early 20th century. In fact, as a result of the variety of these recent immigrants, the United States has become a truly multicultural society. The story of America — who we are and where we come from — is still being written.
Join us as 4 immigrants from Turkey, Brazil, Scotland share their experience and stories about the successive waves of immigrants arriving from all countries of the globe, and about our nation’s struggle to both absorb them as well as adapt to them as a constant thread in our history.
Brazilian born from a third generation Italian Family, Almarina grew up in Sao Paulo, mid-south state of Brazil and lived in Rio de Janeiro for five years. She moved to the US in 1990 to find her love in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA. Work brought her and her husband Simon to Portlandin 2006. Almarina has experience in the apparel and footwear industry – after working for top brands in Brazil, she was able to transfer her knowledge and experience to US brands such as Levi’s, Target, Nike and now at Pendleton.
A native of Istanbul, Turkey, Oya Kara has lived and raised two kids in Portland since 1982. Having a major in English led her first to administrative jobs, then her talents and training led to employment in fine jewelry. She founded “OYA – Elegant Gemstone Jewelry” in 2005 with her daughter, Idil. Oya goes back every year to her beloved Istanbul to walk the streets, watch the sun set over the Bosphorus, and spend time with cousins and friends; also to look for new accessories to incorporate into her jewelry. Oya participates at various local exhibits and puts on trunk shows three times a year. She has been married for 10 years and is a devoted and busy grandma for Idil’s 2 daughters.
Sheila is a Scottish mother, IT executive, business consultant, golf hack, yogi, and now painting student on an interesting journey through life’s stages. She gained her Master of Arts Degree in Mathematics and Spanish in her native Scotland before embarking on an IT career in the UK with global companies. In 1997 she moved with her family to the USA where she held VP, GVP and SVP of IT roles in Polaroid, Albertsons, Supervalu and Knowledge Universe. In 2013 she created Close Consulting LLC: advising client companies on strategy, people, processes, and technology. In 2019, Sheila has newly retired from business to focus her attention on golf, yoga, friends and family, volunteering, and her new hobby of painting.
Amy joined Hurley Development in June 2018 as Project Coordinator to carry out legal and transaction management duties. An attorney from Scotland, she moved to Vancouver, WA December 2017 to be with her husband and start a new life in the U.S. Hurley Development’s projects are throughout Clark County, mainly in Downtown Vancouver including renovation to create the Source Climbing Center, redevelopment of the Sparks Building on Evergreen and the JC Penney building on Main Street, and, construction of a modern office building on 3rd and Columbia which is currently under construction. Hurley Development also refreshes retail centers throughout Vancouver, including locations in Salmon Creek and East Vancouver – a newly developed shopping center named Union Station. Amy is also actively involved in CREW Portland – a supportive and educational network for women in commercial real estate and enjoys organizing the monthly luncheons on topics from Opportunity Zones to mental wellbeing in the workplace. She is passionate about supporting women in her local community to inspire and empower them to reach their ultimate potential.
